1. Martin Creek Lake State Park

Encompassing an area of nearly 300 acres, Martin Creek Lake State Park is located near the small town of Tatum and right on the shores of Martin Creek Lake. A well-known destination among anglers from all over the region, this place is home to large populations of largemouth bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, crappie, tilapia, yellow catfish, and sunfish.

Besides fishing, Martin Creek Lake State Park is also a wonderful destination for other outdoor activities including wildlife watching, hiking, paddling, swimming, and mountain biking. Established in the 1970s, this place is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and boasts extensive hardwood forests of black oak, shortleaf pine, and loblolly pine. Getting here takes a little over one hour by car via route US-79.

2. Mission Tejas State Park

Open year-round between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Mission Tejas State Park is a scenic reserve located about 55 miles south of the Frankston city center. This place is not only a wonderful place to enjoy nature but also a great spot to learn about the history of Texas. Some of the main features you can find here include a commemorative replica of the first Spanish mission in Texas, as well as a section of the El Camino Real de los Tejas trail.

Covering about 660 acres, Mission Tejas State Park was established in 1957 and can be reached in less than one hour by car via routes US-175 and US-69. Some of the activities you can enjoy here include nature viewing, hiking, fishing, and geocaching. Several different types of campsites are available for those wanting to spend the night in the park.

3. Fort Boggy State Park

Donated to the Texas Park and Wildlife Department in the 1980s, Fort Boggy State Park features excellent facilities for nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts from all over the state. Welcoming over 13,000 visitors each year, this place features extensive wetlands, rolling hills, and meadows. Getting here from the Frankston city center takes about one hour and 15 minutes via State Highway 155 and route US-79.
