Then drive over to 535 Park Rd 76 and hop on board! Be sure to arrive early because spending time at the depot is half the fun.
After reading all about the official state railroad of Texas, stop in at the Mail Car Cafe for a yummy snack and refreshing beverage you can enjoy before you board the train for a ride over to the Palestine Depot, or book one of their other excursions for an extended train adventure.
Captain Steven L. Bennett Historical Marker and Park
Take a stroll through this veteran park and learn more about local veterans. Located at 617 West Main St, this park may seem small at first, but with plenty of seating, and a number of large memorial markers, this part is a fascinating part of our local history and should be a stop on your excursion for a unique landmark.
There are a number of other markers close to the park as well, so be sure to look out for the Anderson Counts Civil War Veterans markers, the First Presbyterian Church, the I&GN Railroad in Palestine, and more during your walk throughout the park and town.
McClendon House
Round out your tour around the area by taking a house tour and walking through the exhibits of the famous McClendon House. Located at 806 W. Houston St, this historic Texas landmark is one of a select few historical sites available for public tours. It was built in 1878 after the land was bought by a Texas State Supreme Court Associate Justice from Texas’ first governor, Governor Henderson. The family has saved a number of artifacts, which are on rotating display inside.
If the history isn’t enough to entice you to visit, check out their murder mystery nights. You need 20 of your closest friends to gather in the home for dinner and a mystery to solve. If murder mysteries aren’t your thing, the home and gardens can be rented for a special event of your choice instead. Either way, this historic landmark is worth a visit.
