1. Davy Crockett National Forest

It was founded in 1936 and offers some of the best hiking paths and walking trails in the region. Getting here takes around one hour and twenty minutes by car, driving south along route TX-155 N. The forest is bordered by the Neches River and is comprised almost entirely of pine woodlands.

This beautiful natural escape welcomes hikers with seven miles of trails that go through pine woodlands and pass by photogenic creeks, the banks of the Neches River, and the shores of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. This national forest is a well-known destination among visitors from all over eastern Texas.

The most popular hiking path within the Angelina National Forest is the Sawmill Trail, which has a length of five and a half miles and goes through some of the most beautiful woodland creeks before ending at an abandoned sawmill. While the national forest is open all year round, it is highly recommendable to visit it during the autumn, when the place turns into a brown and orange photographer’s paradise.

3. Sam Houston National Forest

Located a little over 100 miles south of Frankston, the Sam Houston National Forest spans an area of more than 163,000 acres and is crossed by the Lone Star Hiking Trail, considered the longest in the entire state of Texas. If you are looking for a real hiking challenge, this is an excellent spot to visit. Getting to the Sam Houston National Forest from downtown Frankston takes less than two hours by car.
